چکیده

In this paper we present the progress of the HigherOrder-Mode (HOM) coupler design for the high beta CERN SPL (Superconducting Proton Linac) cavities. This includes the RF transmission behavior as well as mechanical and thermal requirements and their optimizations. Warm RF measurements are presented for the rst four high beta SPL Cavities made of bulk niobium. Moreover the rst prototype of a HOM coupler will be introduced and we discuss its characteristics and its tuning possibilities. INTRODUCTION The SPL [1] linac is composed of two types of cavities operating at 704.4MHz in pulsed mode and with geometrical betas of 0.65 and 1. In order to limit beam induced HOM effects, it is considered to use coaxial type HOM couplers on the cut-off tubes of the 5-cell cavities. Based on RF and thermal simulations for the PROBE, HOOK and TESLA designs (already presented in [2]) it was decided to fabricate a prototype of the coupler with probe antenna (PROBE) as shown in Fig. 2. This coupler type was selected for the following features: • Notch lter with a relative high bandwidth (50 kHz) and therefore very robust. • High selectivity (steep transition between stop band or notch lter and pass band). • Best coupling to the monopole HOMs at 1.3GHz. • No active cooling of the antenna necessary.

Hom Couplers for Cern Spl Cavities

Higher-Order-Modes (HOMs) may affect beam stability and refrigeration requirements of superconducting proton linacs such as the SPL, which is studied at CERN as the driver for future neutrino facilities. In order to limit beaminduced HOM effects, CERN considers the use of HOM couplers on the cut-off tubes of the 5-cell superconducting cavities. These couplers consist of resonant antennas shaped...

Hom Spectrum and Q-factor Estimations of the High-beta Cern-spl-cavities*

Beam energy deposited in Higher-Order-Modes may affect both beam stability and cryo power requirements of superconducting proton linacs like those which are objective of the CERN SPL study. We report on numerical studies of the high-beta cavity type, analyzing it's HOM spectrum. These especially include Q-factor estimations based on scattering spectra calculations and an improved pole-fitting a...

Coupler Design and Optimization by GPU-Accelerated DG-FEM

In this contribution we show how consumer graphic processors (GPUs) in conjunction with a suited numerical method can be used for the inexpensive design and optimization of small and medium sized rf components. The underlying scheme is implemented in an open source framework which is readily available. As an application example we present simulations of a possible CERN SPL [1] Higher Order Mode...

In order to set up a powerful proton source for a future Neutrino Factory, increasing at the same time the flux of protons available for new and existing facilities, CERN is studying a 2.2 GeV superconducting Hlinac for 4 MW beam power, called SPL. The superconducting part of this linac covers the energy range from 120 MeV to 2.2 GeV. Three sections made of 352 MHz cavities with nominal ß of 0....

800MHz CRAB CAVITY CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR THE LHC UPGRADE*

Abstract In this paper, we present an 800 MHz crab cavity conceptual design for the LHC upgrade. The cell shape is optimized for lower maximum peak surface fields as well as higher transverse R/Q. A compact coax-to-coax coupler scheme is proposed to damp the LOM/SOM modes. A two-stub antenna with a notch filter is used as the HOM coupler to damp the HOM modes in the horizontal plane and rejects...
